Richard Tesore Interview
For over 30 years Richard Tesore has been rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals in a shelter built on land concessioned to him off the coast of Uruguay. Now Tesore has to fight the local authorities who want to develop and build on this land, in a battle of nature versus development.
A BATTLE OF NATURE VERSUS DEVELOPMENT...
Richard Tesore
The guardian of the sea creatures
Tesore is a Uruguayan man dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals. He survives through the generosity of those who support his cause, and the passion that has driven him to do this for over 30 years. Without any formal veterinary training, Tesore has saved the lives of over 15,000 animals and knows exactly how to help the creatures he rescues.

Debora de Sola Habsburg
I have been involved with rescuing animals my whole life. Growing up in Uruguay, I took care of all the motherless animals I found on the farm. To my parent’s dismay I would bring home an array of babies, from sheep to skunks! When we lived in Montevideo near the River Plate, I also rescued several penguins and a Sea Lion. They co-existed in our backyard with my rabbits, chickens and dogs until one day I became concerned that the penguins needed to go back to the ocean. That’s when some fishermen introduced me to Richard Tesore. It’s been many years since I met him and his passion for preservation has inspired me to tell this story.
