The Director
By Pollination Pictures

I have been involved with rescuing animals my whole life. Growing up in Uruguay, I took care of all the motherless animals I found on the farm. To my parent’s dismay I would bring home an array of babies, from sheep to skunks! When we lived in Montevideo near the River Plate, I also rescued several penguins and a seal. They co-existed in our backyard with my rabbits, chickens and dogs until one day I became concerned that the penguins needed to go back to the ocean. That’s when some fishermen introduced me to Richard Tesore. It’s been almost 30 years since I met him and his passion for preservation has inspired me to tell this story. Through this film, I get to integrate my love of animals with my film work, and to spread the importance of this story’s message.

My directorial debut, “Real Wonder Women” (50 min.) documentary about unsung heroines in my community that were a source of strength and inspiration to me, was shot and edited with an almost totally female crew during covid times in Miami. The film was completed in 2022, and screened in 2023 at the “Sunscreen Film Festival”, “Orlando Film Festival” and Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.  “Real Wonder Women” won various awards including: Best Director, Best Documentary, and Outstanding Excellence for Social Issues among others.

Director’s statement  â€‹

This story is about a man who is relentless and whose passion for rescuing and helping animals goes beyond his own personal gains and needs. It's about a human’s bond with animals that he barely knows, but for which he feels a sense of connection and responsibility that is  strong enough to keep him up for days and nights caring for them.  I hope to capture that special bond between humans and animals by following how Tesore interacts with the animals and how they respond to him.  â€‹â€‹

I decided to make this film when I heard that Richard Tesore’s rescue center was being shut down. I felt it was vital for people to learn about Tesore’s work and to understand what is required to rehabilitate the animals, as most have no idea how time consuming and brutal the task can be. It is hard to understand all that is involved while caring for rescued animals if you do not see it first hand. The film immerses us in Tesore’s mission, its rewards and how challenging it can be.

Guardian Of The Sea Creatures is an intimate and moving documentary film drawing us into Richard Tesore’s  profound love and mission. Through a series of interviews, we delve into and explore the inner world that drives this man to dedicate his life to rescuing marine animals. We also investigate the  reasons why the local Government is requiring Richard to shut down his operation and leave this land.

With this documentary I aspire to bring national and international awareness to the importance of Tesore’s work so that he will finally receive the support and the recognition he so deserves. I hope this film inspires others to follow in Tesore’s example to take animal protection and welfare seriously, even when it is not a priority for the establishment.

I believe that as the species who currently predominates on our planet, it is our responsibility to care, sustain, and preserve every animal species on the earth.
